Wedding Budget Power Hour: A Couple's Financial Exercise

Ready to tackle your wedding budget without the stress? This 60-minute exercise turns the potentially awkward "money talk" into an engaging activity that will strengthen your partnership while setting a solid foundation for your wedding plans.

What You'll Need

  • Timer
  • Two notebooks or digital devices for notes
  • Calculator
  • Your favorite beverage (a little celebratory champagne, perhaps?)
  • Comfortable space free from distractions

Let the Games Begin!

Round 1: Dream Wedding Showdown (10 minutes)

Separately, then together

  1. Individual Vision (5 minutes): Without discussing with each other, each partner writes down their top 5 "must-haves" for the wedding and a rough estimate of what they think the total wedding should cost.
  2. The Reveal (5 minutes): Share your lists and discuss any surprises. Were your cost estimates close or miles apart? Did you prioritize similar elements? This isn't about right or wrong, it's about understanding each other's vision.

Round 2: Financial Reality Check (15 minutes)

Together

  1. Current Savings Inventory (5 minutes): Write down all current savings you're willing to allocate to the wedding.
  2. Monthly Savings Challenge (5 minutes): Calculate how much you can realistically save each month until the wedding. Multiply by the number of months to get your potential savings contribution.
  3. Family Contribution Clarity (5 minutes): List any confirmed financial contributions from family members and any conditions attached to those funds.

Round 3: Budget Building Blocks (20 minutes)

Together

  1. Total Budget Calculation (5 minutes): Add up current savings + projected savings + family contributions to establish your preliminary total budget.
  2. Category Allocation Game (15 minutes): Using the preliminary budget, allocate percentages to different wedding categories. Use these starter percentages as a guide, but adjust based on your Round 1 priorities:
    • Venue & Catering: 45%
    • Photography/Videography: 12%
    • Attire & Beauty: 9%
    • Flowers & Décor: 9%
    • Entertainment: 8%
    • Stationery: 3%
    • Rings: 2%
    • Transportation: 2%
    • Officiant: 1%
    • Cake/Dessert: 2%
    • Gifts/Favors: 2%
    • Emergency Fund: 5%

Round 4: Reality Test & Compromise (10 minutes)

  1. The Gap Analysis (5 minutes): Compare your Round 3 budget with your Round 1 dream wedding estimates. Is there a gap? If so, how big is it?
  2. Compromise & Creative Solutions (5 minutes): For any significant gaps, brainstorm three possible solutions:
    • Option A: Extend the engagement to save more
    • Option B: Scale back certain elements
    • Option C: Find creative alternatives to achieve similar effects

Final Round: Commitment Ceremony (5 minutes)

  1. Budget Declaration: Write down your agreed total budget and top three priorities.
  2. Commitment Pledge: Create a simple pledge about how you'll handle future budget discussions and decisions. For example: "We commit to checking in on our budget monthly and making joint decisions on any changes."
  3. Celebration: Toast to successfully completing your first major wedding planning milestone!
